BRUNSWICK

In honor of National Fire Prevention Week, Brunswick Fire Department will host an open house Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Emerson Station, rain or shine.

There will be numerous life safety vendors, popcorn, balloons and the fire safety trailer on hand, according to Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Emerson. There will also be a child identification program from the Masonic Lodge at the event and the first-ever bouncy house. Emerson said the town’s open houses are always successful and typically draw as many as 300 to 500 kids.

Fire prevention week allows fire departments to concentrate fire prevention efforts into one week out of the year and “allows us to really get out there and push fire safety messages and see if we can make a difference,” Emerson said. It also comes at a convenient time of year when people are starting to get ready for winter and getting heating systems up and running so they typically have many heating-based questions.

And as winter time approaches and it is becoming more and more expensive to heat homes effectively, “we like to make sure that when people are getting prepared and finding new says to heat their homes, they’re as safe as possible,” Emerson said.

Emerson Station is located at 284 Bath Road in Cook’s Corner.

Also, Richmond Fire Department will host an open house today from 5 to 7 p.m. at the central station on Myrtle Street. The fire safety trailer will be on hand as well as a firefighter’s pole and Sparky the fire dog.

Woolwich Fire Department’s open house will also run Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Bath Fire Department will host an open house Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the fire station at 864 High St.

Durham Fire and Rescue will host educational classes at the fire station for children attending pre-K through grade four this week. Bowdoin Fire Department will visit Bowdoin Central School later in the month to conduct a fire safety program.
