FREEPORT — The Times Record won 10 awards — including third place among all Maine daily newspapers in the General Excellence category — in Maine Press Association’s annual Better Newspaper Contest.

The contest graded daily and weekly newspapers from April 1, 2011, to March 31.

Melissa Orth won first place in the Critic’s Award category for her review of Maine State Music Theatre’s August 2011 production of “The Wiz.”

Robert Long took first place for a staff editorial titled “Embracing the shadows.”

Copy editor Daryl Madore took second place in the News Graphic category.

Troy R. Bennett took three awards: second place in the Feature Photo category; and third place in Scenic Photo and People Photo categories.

Darren Fishell took third in the Staff Blogger category.

Long and Fishell took second in the News Headline category.

In the Freedom of Information category, Fishell and Long took second place.

In the General Excellence category, the Times-Record placed third, behind only the Sun Journal and Portland Press Herald — papers with much larger staffs and budgets.
