The postseason is now in full swing for every sport save football. Cross country had its conference championship meet Friday. Golf wrapped up its 2012 campaign with individual championships Saturday. Field hockey’s playoffs are underway and soccer and will commence starting this weekend.

Here’s a glimpse:

Golf

Brunswick’s Brad Smith was runner-up to Gorham’s Mike Caron as the Class A boys’ individual golf championship Saturday at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro. Smith had a round of 76, one behind Caron. Mt. Ararat’s Tyler O’Connor shot an 80 and tied Scarborough’s Brandon Hall for fifth.

Field hockey

Mt. Ararat was the lone local field hockey to qualify for the playoffs. The Eagles finished the regular season 10-4 after a 3-0 home win over Brunswick last Tuesday. Mt. Ararat earned the No. 4 seed in Eastern Class A and hosted fifth-ranked Lewiston (9-5) in the quarterfinals Wednesday. The Eagles lost, 2-0, at Lewiston, Sept. 4, but beat the visiting Blue Devils, 4-0, Oct. 2. If victorious, Mt. Ararat will go to top-ranked, perennial champion Skowhegan (14-0) in Saturday’s semifinal. In the season opener, Aug. 31, the Eagles lost at home to Skowhegan, 5-0.

Brunswick wound up 2-9-3- and 10th after the loss to Mt. Ararat, but did not qualify for the postseason.

In Western B, Morse ended the year with a 3-1 loss to Erskine to finish 1-13 and 14th in the region.

Cross country

The Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference had its cross country championship meet last weekend at Cony High School in Augusta.

In Class A, Mt. Ararat won the girls’ meet, while Brunswick came in second. Brunswick’s Tessa Cassidy was the individual runner-up (20 minutes, 53 seconds over the 5-kilometer course). The Eagles were paced by Olivia Swan (fifth, 21:17).

In Class B, Morse finished fifth (Camden Hills was tops). The top individual for the Shipbuilders was Amy Franklin (20th, 23:13).

On the boys’ side, in Class A, Lewiston was first, Mt. Ararat fourth and Brunswick eighth. The Eagles were paced by Sam Wood (third, 17:27). The fastest Dragon was Jamie Ross (20th, 18:42).

In Class B, Morse came in fourth (Maranacook was first). Nate Stover (22nd, 19:33) was the fastest individual.

The regional championships are Saturday at Belfast, also the site of the state meet Oct. 27.

Football

Brunswick’s football team improved to 6-1 Friday with a 41-14 victory at Oxford Hills. The Dragons are tied with Messalonskee for second in the Eastern Class A Crabtree Points standings behind reigning regional champion Lawrence. Friday, Brunswick hosts 7-0 Lawrence in a pivotal showdown.

Mt. Ararat fell to 0-7 after a 62-7 loss at Messalonskee. The Eagles (10th in Eastern A) hosts 3-4 Skowhegan Friday.

In Eastern B, Morse fell to 2-5 after a 42-13 home loss to top-ranked Mt. Blue last weekend. The Shipbuilders (ninth in the Crabtrees) close at 2-5 Oceanside Friday.

Boys’ soccer

Mt. Ararat’s boys’ soccer team was in first place in the Eastern A Heals at the start of the week with an 11-1-1 record. The Eagles were coming off a 2-1 victory at Brunswick and a 3-1 home win over Bangor. Mt. Ararat closed the regular season at Edward Little Tuesday.

Brunswick took an 8-3-2 and the No. 4 spot into Tuesday’s finale at Lewiston. Last week, the Dragons fell at home to Mt. Ararat, 2-1, and downed visiting Edward Little, 4-1.

In Western B, Morse was clinging to the 11th and final playoff spot with a 4-10 record at press time. The Shipbuilders closed with losses to visiting Camden Hills (4-0) and host Gardiner (2-0).

Girls’ soccer

On the girls’ side, Morse finished another great season at 12-1-1 after wins at Camden Hills (3-0) and Gardiner (4-2) and at home over Medomak Valley (1-0). The Shipbuilders got three goals from Miracle Trimble against the Windjammers, four Trimble goals against the Tigers and one from Brianna Williams versus Medomak. Morse was battling Falmouth for the top playoff seed.

In Eastern A, Brunswick entered Tuesday’s home finale versus Lewiston a close second to defending state champion Bangor in the Heals. A win would put the Dragons over the top. Last week, Brunswick blanked host Mt. Ararat, 2-0, and host Edward Little, 4-0.

The Eagles were ninth at 8-5 entering their last game Tuesday against visiting Edward Little. Mt. Ararat dropped a 2-0 home decision to Brunswick and a 5-0 game at Bangor last week.
