SOUTH PORTLAND — Political newcomer Melissa Linscott has defeated Councilor and former Mayor Rosemarie De Angelis for the District 3 City Council seat, 7,144 to 5,514.

Linscott, who owns a Knightville real estate agency with her husband, Brian Linscott, was making her first run for elected office. Linscott had support and endorsements from councilors Maxine Beecher, Gerard Jalbert and Alan Livingston. District 3 covers the center of the city.

De Angelis has held the District 3 seat twice, from 2003 to 2006 and again from 2009 to now. She was elected mayor in 2010 for a one-year term. She was endorsed by current Mayor Patti Smith.

The District 3 seat was the only contested race on the city ballot. Former South Portland and Portland City Clerk Linda Cohen was elected to replace Beecher in District 4. Beecher was barred from running for a fourth consecutive term by city charter rules.

Incumbents Richard Matthews and Tappan Fitzgerald Jr. were re-elected to the South Portland Board of Education in districts 3 and 5, respectively.
