ITHACA, N.Y. — Bridget McCarthy made seven saves, and Bowdoin made all five of its penalty kicks in a shootout as the Polar Bears advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III women’s soccer tournament, beating Scranton after the teams played to a scoreless draw through regulation and overtime.

Bowdoin (11-3-4) advances to play Ithaca at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

VOLLEYBALL

BOWDOIN 3, SPRINGFIELD 2: Melissa Haskell had 19 kills and 10 digs, and Christy Jewett contributed 16 kills and five blocks as the Polar Bears (28-4) won the final three sets to beat the Pride (27-8) in an NCAA Division III second-round match at New London, Conn.

FIELD HOCKEY

BRIDGEWATER STATE 2, UNE 1: Emily Koehler staked UNE (11-10) to a first-half lead, but Bridgewater (18-3) rallied in the second half to eliminate the Nor’easters in an ECAC semifinal at Bridgewater, Mass.

MEN’S HOCKEY

MAINE 4, UMASS-LOWELL 3: Freshman Kyle Williams redirected Mike Cornell’s shot into the net at 11:10 of the third period to lift the Black Bears (2-9, 1-5 Hockey East) over the River Hawks (2-4-1, 1-3-1) at Lowell, Mass.

Maine built a 3-1 lead on goals from Connor Leen, Adam Shemansky and Devin Shore.

Martin Ouellette stopped 27 shots for the Black Bears.

SOUTHERN MAINE 4, ST. MICHAEL’S 0: Brad McGovern had a goal and an assist as the Huskies (2-2, 2-2 ECAC) blanked the Purple Knights (1-3, 1-2) at South Burlington, Vt.

NORWICH 7, UNE 1: Adam Laitte scored for UNE (1-3, 1-3 ECAC East) in a loss to the Cadets (3-0, 3-0) at Northfield, Vt.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

MAINE 3, BEMIDJI STATE 2: Audra Richards scored in the fourth round of the shootout to give the Black Bears (2-7) a win over the Beavers (2-6-1) at Bemidji, Minn.

NORWICH 7, SOUTHERN MAINE 2: Tori Charron notched a pair of goals to spark the Cadets (4-0-2, 4-0 ECAC) past the Huskies (1-1, 1-1) at Gorham.

Erin Banfield and Kaily Bubier scored for USM, and Liz Bergstrom finished with 39 saves.

NICHOLS 7, UNE 4: Grace Murphy had a hat trick to lead the Bisons (2-2) past the Nor’easters (0-1) at Biddeford.

Shannon Reynolds and Marissa Clifford-Biederman scored two goals each for UNE.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

WOFFORD 79, MAINE 76: The Terriers (1-1) hit three straight free throws in the final minute of overtime to defeat the Black Bears (0-2) at Raleigh, N.C.

Brittany Wells’ 3-pointer with 18 seconds remaining in regulation capped an 11-0 run for the Black Bears.

Ashleigh Roberts had a career-high 29 points for Maine.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

DARTMOUTH 67, MAINE 54: Gabas Maldunas had 25 points and nine rebounds to power the Big Green past the Black Bears in an opener at Hanover, N.H.

Mike Allison had 17 points and 11 rebounds for Maine.

SMCC 111, NMCC 64: Six players scored in double digits as the Seawolves (6-1, 2-0 YSCC) cruised past the Falcons (0-2, 0-2) at South Portland.

Emmanuel Donalson and Chance Baldino had 13 points apiece for SMCC.
