WESTFIELD, Mass. — Bowdoin College juniors Coby Horowitz and Sam Seekins became the first set of Polar Bear teammates to finish 1-2 at the New England Division III Cross Country Championships Saturday at Westfield State.

The finishes propelled the Polar Bear men’s cross country team to a secondplace finish at the competition, the team’s best since 2002, and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championship next weekend in Terre Haute, Ind.

Bowdoin took 11th place overall in the women’s championship.

Middlebury scored 91 points to edge Bowdoin (101) with both teams earning the region’s two automatic bids to NCAA’s.

Horowitz won his second-straight major event by taking first place in a sprint to the finish in 24:51.36. Seekins finished right behind in 24:51.45. Nicholas Saba also earned All-New England honors (top-35) by taking 20th in 25:21.99. Kevin Hoose (37th, 25:42.94) and Gregory Talpey (41st, 25:52.03) rounded out the top five Polar Bear finishers.

On the women’s side, Bowdoin took 11th in the field of 51 teams. Madelena Rizzo continued her exceptional campaign by finishing in a time of 22:13.35, good enough for 22nd place and a spot on the All-New England team.

Olivia MacKenzie was 57th in a time of 22:55.55, followed by Lucy Skinner in 68th with a pace of 23:04.54. Gina Stalica (102nd, 23:40.76) and Brenna Fischer (108th, 23:50.80) closed out the top-five Bowdoin runners.
