KITTERY — Reed & Reed Inc,, a general contractor based in Woolwich, has been picked to repair and strengthen berths at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery.
U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree announced Wednesday that the Navy awarded the $13 million contract to the midcoast company, which was founded in 1928 as a bridge building firm.

Pingree, a Democrat and a member of the House Armed Services Committee, said the value of the contract could increase to more than $16 million if certain options are exercised.
Reed & Reed will help stabilize and strengthen repair berths at the shipyard and remove over 1,000 feet of unused railroad track. The work is expected to be completed by the fall of 2014.
“This is great news because it means putting Maine people to work and making sure the facilities in Kittery are maintained and upgraded so they can maintain their reputation for efficiency and high quality work,” Pingree said in a statement.
Portsmouth Naval Shipyard overhauls, repairs and modernizes Los Angeles-class nuclear submarines for the Navy.
Reed & Reed was the general contractor on the $65 million replacement for Veterans Memorial Bridge between Portland and South Portland. It opened in June.
