ORR’S ISLAND — Marjorie Olive Murch Black, 97, of Orr’s Island, Maine, passed away peacefully November 11, 2012 at her home.

Marge, as she was known, was born in Portland, ME on August 24, 1915, daughter of Karl and Isabelle Brown Murch. At age 3, upon the death of her mother, Marge went to live with her grandparents in South Casco, ME. Later she returned to Portland to attend school, but continued to spend summers in So Casco.

Marge graduated Deering High School in Portland, ME and attended the University of Maine in Orono. In 1936 she married Kenneth Black who passed away in 1992. Marge and Ken lived in such places as California, returning with the onset of World War II to be closer to their families; Laconia, Gilford, and Lancaster NH; and Portland, Falmouth and Yarmouth, ME; before finally moving permanently to the Black family homestead on Orr’s Island.

For many years Marge worked for Senter’s Department Store in Brunswick, ME, a job which she loved. Until bedridden with arthritis, she was an attentive gardener, avid reader and gifted knitter who learned to use a computer in her late 80s so that she might email friends and family and play games. She also enjoyed happy hour gatherings with neighbors and family.

Marge took great joy in and was especially proud of her children, son Karl (Demaris) of Quincy, IL; son Robert (Jan), who passed away in 2011, of Liberty, MO; and son Timothy (Cheryl) of Orr’s Island.
