PORTLAND – While millions of “Twilight” fans waited for the newest film in the series to open nationally late Thursday, a half-dozen “Twihards” were at the Nickelodeon Cinemas shortly before noon to begin a 12-hour, five-movie marathon of their favorite vampire flicks.
Nicole Doyer, a nurse from Standish, finished her shift at 7 a.m. She took a nap, and by 11:30 a.m. was waiting to see a marathon of all five “Twilight” films with another nurse, Julie Scott of Saco.

“Sleep is overrated. I’ve seen all the films before so I’ll nap a little in between,” said Doyer, 41. “We’ve read all the books and seen the movies. But the movies came out far apart from each other, so it’ll be nice to tie everything together by seeing them all at once.”
“And it’s a good way to say goodbye to the series. Though I’m bummed it’s ending,” Scott said.
The final “Twilight” film, “Breaking Dawn – Part 2” opened nationally at 10 p.m. Thursday, and was to be the final film in the Nickelodeon’s marathon.
Kate Colen of York, Pa., drove nine hours to be at the theater and see the marathon with her friend Melanie Gleason, of Windham.
“It’s something we always do together, every year,” said Gleason, 37, of seeing “Twilight” marathons each year with her friend.
Sonja McFerren, 38, of Standish, arranged for her husband to take care of her three children Thursday so she could be at the marathon between noon and midnight. It was a rare treat for McFerren.
“I’ve been to the movies once a year for the last four years and it’s always been to see one of these (“Twilight”) movies,” McFerren said.
