Police continue to investigate a deadly car crash near the Topsham Fair Mall on Wednesday that claimed the life of a 79-year-old Brunswick woman.
The crash was reported shortly after 2 p.m. in the mall area near Ruby Tuesday.
Topsham Police Lt. Fred Dunn said a 2001 Toyota Camry driven by Sally Lemieux, 79, of Brunswick, apparently was pulling out of the parking lot by Ruby Tuesday. A 1997 Jeep Wrangler driven by 25-year-old Renee Ettinger of Topsham was traveling south on Topsham Fair Mall Road and struck the driver’s side door of the Camry. Dunn said the Jeep had the right of way.
Firefighters cut the roof off the car to remove Lemieux, who was the sole occupant. Bystanders watched firefighters work and then a LifeFlight helicopter land on Tops- ham Fair Mall Road. But by the time the helicopter arrived, Dunn said, Lemieux had died.
Ettinger, the sole occupant of the Jeep, was not injured.
Dunn said late Wednesday afternoon that police have at least one witness to the crash. Brunswick Police Department’s collision reconstruction unit is conducting a crash reconstruction. Lt. Tom Garrepy and Sgt. Russ Wrede returned to the scene early this morning to reconstruct and map the crash.
The vehicles, which were both towed from the scene Wednesday, will be inspected to make sure they were working correctly as part of the investigation, Dunn said.
Topsham Fire and Rescue responded to the scene along with some firefighters from Lisbon.
