For some, the baseball season just ended.

“It’s finally over,” tweeted right-handed reliever Brock Huntzinger, a native of Anderson, Ind., on Thursday night. “I’ll be on Hoosier soil tonight.

Huntzinger’s season began in spring training in Florida, then it was on to Portland for the season before he finished in the playoffs with Pawtucket, the Triple-A International League champion.

Huntzinger and some Sea Dogs teammates were then off to the Arizona Fall League, a showcase for prospects.

In Arizona, Huntzinger gave up two runs in his first outing and only one after that, ending with a 1.93 ERA over 14 innings. Opponents hit .315, with Hunt-zinger dominating right-handers (.182). Lefties hit .524 off him. 

BRYCE BRENTZ followed the same path — Florida, Portland, Pawtucket and Arizona. He did well in 62 at-bats in Arizona, batting .297 with two homers and an .804 OPS.

Sea Dogs catcher Christian Vazquez played only 10 games in Arizona and hit .257, but four of his nine hits were for extra bases, including a home run.

Third baseman Michael Almanzar, who is expected in Portland this April, struggled against the high level of pitching, with a .185 average and a .506 OPS.

Sea Dogs reliever Ryan Pressley had a 3.86 ERA, and future Portland pitcher Pete Ruiz had a couple bad outings, boosting his ERA to 8.25. 

ANTHONY RANAUDO made his second Puerto Rican winter league start and couldn’t repeat his debut hitless performance. He didn’t get out of the second inning, allowing six hits and six runs over 12/3 innings.

Jeremy Kehrt is also in Puerto Rico. In his first game, he pitched 32/3 innings (three hits, no runs, four strikeouts). 

RYAN REID, the former Deering High pitcher, signed a minor-league contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates with an invitation to major-league spring training. Reid, 27, was a minor-league free agent after not being resigned by the Tampa Bay Rays. He pitched in Triple-A in 2012, recording a 3.52 ERA and averaging one strikeout per inning. 

TOMMY HOTTOVY, the former Sea Dogs left-hander, was traded by Kansas City to the Texas Rangers for a player to be named.

Hottovy signed with Kansas City as a free agent last year. He pitched mainly in Triple-A (3.52 ERA) but also appeared in nine major-league games (2.89).

The Royals designated Hottovy for assignment, then sent him to the Rangers, who placed Hottovy on their 40-man roster.

If he makes the Rangers’ roster, Hottovy will become teammates with a former Sea Dogs outfielder, David Murphy. They were never together in Portland. Hottovy first joined the Sea Dogs in July 2006, two months after Murphy was promoted to Triple-A.
