BRUNSWICK – Robert Toczylowski had a goal and an assist, and Steve Messina stopped 29 shots to lead the Bowdoin men’s hockey team to a 2-0 win over Williams in a NESCAC opener Friday night.

Toczylowski set up Harry Matheson’s power-play goal at 16:13 of the first period, then added a goal with 1:15 left in the third.

Sean Dougherty made 30 saves for the Ephs.

MIDDLEBURY 5, COLBY 2: The Panthers scored four straight goals to defeat the Mules in a NESCAC opener at Waterville.

Nick Lanza scored both goals for Colby, which had two leads in the opening 40 minutes before Middlebury took control in the third period.

USM 5, UNE 3: Alex Pompeo scored twice in the final eight minutes as the Huskies (3-2, 3-2 ECAC East) used three third-period goals to get by the Nor’easters (1-4, 1-4) at Biddeford.

Ryan Seward’s unassisted goal at 2:10 of the third pulled Southern Maine even. Pompeo put the Huskies ahead with a power-play goal at 12:06 and added another with 2:39 remaining.

David Nies scored two power-play goals in the final two minutes of the first to give Southern Maine a 2-0 lead, but UNE rallied in the second with goals from Zach Lokey, Zeth Zielinski and Nick Kolb.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

BATES 83, UM-AUGUSTA 43: Ed Bogdanovich had 21 points and eight rebounds to lead the Bobcats (1-0) past the Moose (0-3) on the first day of the Bates Tipoff Classic at Lewiston.

Luke Matarazzo added 17 points and Mark Brust had 16 for Bates.

Cooper Walker led UM-Augusta with 13 points.

Bates will play Emerson in the championship game Sunday.

SMCC 100, PAUL SMITH’S COLLEGE 67: Emmanuel Donalson had 16 points as the Seawolves (8-1, 4-0 YSCC) downed the Bobcats (2-4, 2-2) at South Portland.

Chance Baldino added 12 points and Jose Nouchanthavong controlled the distribution for the Seawolves with 12 assists and two steals.

CLARK 55, BOWDOIN 54: Brian Vayda scored 24 points, including a 3-pointer with four seconds left to give the Cougars a victory over the Polar Bears in an opener at Willimantic, Conn.

Andrew Malinger had 15 points and Keegan Pieri added 14 to pace Bowdoin, which overcame a five-point halftime deficit to take a 54-52 lead before Vayda sank the winner.

Bowdoin had a chance to win, but Bryan Hurley’s 3-point attempt with two seconds remaining fell short.

THOMAS 99, UNE 76: Adam Carlsen scored 14 points off the bench to lead four double-digit scorers for the Terriers, who downed the Nor’easters in an opener at the Charlie Ryan Classic in Farmington.

Charles Fenner III scored 24 points for UNE, which will face UM-Farmington in the consolation game Sunday.

(3) KENTUCKY 101, LAFAYETTE 49: Kyle Wiltjer hit seven 3-pointers and scored 23 points, and Alex Poythress added a career-high 22 as Kentucky won in a rout at Lexington, Ky.

The Wildcats shot 65 percent (40 of 62) from the field, including 11-of-19 shooting from 3-point range, and Wiltjer set the tone by hitting his first two to open the game.
