SOUTH PORTLAND — It could take crews from the Portland Water District several more hours before they can repair a water main break at 148 Pickett St. in South Portland.

“We expect to be there well into the evening and possibly into Tuesday morning,” Michelle Clements, a spokeswoman for the Water District, said Monday.

Clements said about 20 customers are without water service as a result of the break. One of the largest customers is Joe’s Boathouse, a restaurant at Port Harbor Marina.

Restaurant owner Joe Loring said he had to shut down Monday after serving lunch. He said it would be impossible to serve meals without water, which is used to wash dishes and to operate restrooms.
Loring said he hopes to be able to reopen for Tuesday lunch.

People who live on Pickett Street at the eastern end of Broadway will be allowed to drive to their homes, while other traffic was being diverted.

The 12-inch water main broke around noon, affecting service to 20 customers between Broadway and Bug Light Park, including Breakwater Condominiums, Clements said.

The water main break did not impact students or staff at the nearby Southern Maine Community College.
