Lee Academy has been placed on two years of probation by the Maine Principals Association for providing some of its student-athletes with inducements, but it will not identify the specific incidents that resulted in the probation.

The MPA was acting on a complaint filed by member school Dirigo High of Dixfield last February after its basketball team beat Lee in the Class C state championship game.

The probation was recommended Oct. 9 by a three-member panel formed by the MPA. The recommendation was approved by the association’s Interscholastic Management Committee on Nov. 6 and made public on Thursday.

The MPA will not strip Lee Academy of its Eastern Maine Championship — which it won to get the state championship game — or otherwise sanction the private town academy of about 300 students, located east of Lincoln. The school has about 100 boarding students from about 17 countries and 15 states. The annual cost to attend Lee Academy as a boarding student is $31,000.

As part of its probation, Lee Academy will provide the MPA with its written policies on its admission process and its tuition and room and board costs and which of its students are competing in interscholastic sports.

The probation period began Oct. 9.

Lee Academy is located in Lee, Maine, a small town of 920 residents in Penobscot County.
