HARTFORD, Conn. – Andy Miele scored his sixth of the season and Mark Visentin stopped 28 shots for his first professional shutout as the Portland Pirates won their fourth straight, 1-0 over the Connecticut Whale at the XL Center Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
Miele worked a give-and-go with left winger Rob Klinkhammer on the lone goal. Miele received the puck at the Connecticut blue line and weaved his way to the net before forcing goalie Cameron Talbot to his right and slipping in a backhander with 6:54 left in the first period. Defenseman Mark Louis also earned an assist on the play.
Miele had seven shots on goal despite two trips to the penalty box.
Centers Brandon Shinnimin and Alexandre Bolduc each got four shots in on Talbot.
The Pirates dominated the period, outshooting the Whale 12-6, but the teams nearly evened out the rest of the way with the Pirates holding just a 32-28 advantage at game’s end.
Both teams struggled with their power plays as Portland missed on six chances, including three in the third period, and Connecticut came up empty on its four opportunities.
Portland will travel to Manchester for a 3 p.m. game against the Monarchs on Sunday.
The Pirates, 14-10-1, remain in second place behind the Providence Bruins.
