YARMOUTH — The answers Randy Small heard in a preseason captains’ meeting were music to his ears.

“In the first week, the captains came in and said, ‘We don’t care who scores the points as long as we get the win,’” said Small, York’s boys’ basketball coach. “As a coach, you don’t want anything more to hear from a (player) than that. They move the ball very well.”

The Wildcats continued to live up to their preseason statement Saturday night, as four players reached double digits in a 72-48 victory over Yarmouth.

It was the fourth straight win for the Wildcats, and the fourth in a row that featured three or more players in double figures.

“A bunch of guys worked hard in the offseason, so it’s not down to one or two guys like most teams,” said Aaron Todd, who paced the Wildcats with 16 points. “We have five or six guys who can really put it in the hoop on any given night. We have five threats on the floor, which is extremely hard to defend for a high school team.”

Adam Bailey (15 points), Zachary Leal (12) and Hayden Webster (10) rounded out York’s quartet of leading scorers.

When you combine that balance with outstanding size and a knack for jumping on the opposition early, it makes York a tough team to keep in check.

Bailey set the tone with back-to-back 3-pointers – he finished with five 3s – as York built a 10-0 lead.

“That’s one thing we’ve worked on all year this year,” said Small. “When you get off the bus, be ready to play. When the kids are sitting in the bleachers listening to their headphones they are dialed in, and it’s paid off the last two games. We’ve gotten off to a great start, and it puts a team in a hole. If you are always fighting to get out of a hole it gives us an advantage.”

The Clippers (3-1) missed their first five shots. Yarmouth trailed 23-12 after eight minutes.

Things didn’t get much better for Yarmouth in the second quarter. A 12-2 run midway through the quarter upped York’s advantage to 38-19. It was 42-21 at the break.

“I think York is a very good team,” said Yarmouth Coach Adam Smith. “They are able to go inside and out pretty effectively with some length, and they get up and down the floor real well, too. They are a well-rounded team.”

Wyatt Jackson paced the Clippers with 11 points off the bench.
