RANGELEY — As officials had predicted, a recovery effort to find three missing snowmobilers is still on hold today due to high winds, according to Col. John MacDonald, a spokesman for the Maine Warden Service.
During a news conference Tuesday morning, Lt. Kevin Adam said recovery efforts on Rangeley Lake might not resume until Thursday, when wind in the region is expected to subside.
When weather conditions improve, searchers plan to use sonar equipment to find the men, who are presumed dead.
Snowmobilers Glenn Henderson, 43, of Sabattus; Kenneth Henderson, 40, of China; and John Spencer, 41, of Litchfield, presumably drove their sleds into open water on Sunday night.
On Monday, wardens recovered the body of Dawn Newell, 45, of Yarmouth, who also drove her sled into the water about the same time, at a different location.
The temperature at Rangeley Lake was hovering around 0 degrees Wednesday, with steady wind at 25 mph, MacDonald said.
