YARMOUTH — Clare Mendes turned aside 31 shots as the Brunswick High School girls ice hockey team picked up a 5-1 Eastern victory over Yarmouth/Freeport (3-7) at Travis Roy Arena on Wednesday.

Rachel Moroney and Tess Cassidy had two goals each for the Dragons, who improved to 3-6 and take on Mt. Ararat for the first time on Saturday at Sidney J. Watson Arena at 6:15 p.m.

Eliza Brooks had three assists, while Gillian Ford scored a big goal moments after Yarmouth/Freeport’s Ariel Potter (assisted by Katie Brown and Emily Johnson) put the hosts on the board in the third period.

“We moved Gillian up to the wing in the third period and it paid off,” said Brunswick coach Bill Bodwell. “Clare continues to play well in goal. We were outshot through the first two periods handily (22-9).”

Moroney added two assists, while Cassidy dished out a helper.

Yarmouth/Freeport goaltender Hannah Williams had nine saves.
