PORTLAND — The Coast Guard has been conducting ice-breaking operations with the colder weather this week.

The Coast Guard evaluates specific requests to break ice on a case-by-case basis to help facilitate commerce and to ensure safe passageways for boaters.

The cutter Bridle had spent 48 hours breaking through ice varying from 1 to 6 inches of thickness in the Penobscot River up to Bangor.

The Rockland-based cutter Tackle spent Friday performing ice-breaking operations in Rockland Harbor at the request of fishermen who were unable to safely leave the harbor.
