PORTLAND — Police stopped a car Sunday on Presumpscot Street and drew their firearms, but the incident ended with no shots fired and no one charged with a crime.

Lt. Tom Simonds of the South Portland police said his department received a call Sunday afternoon from a woman who said she was going to pursue another vehicle whose occupants — a man and a woman — had allegedly stolen something from her in the parking lot of the Burlington Coat Factory off Western Avenue in South Portland.

Simonds said that based on the woman’s account, Portland police were told the occupants of the vehicle might have a weapon. “It turned into a high-risk stop for Portland,” he said.

Once the car had been pulled over and the occupants interviewed by police, it was determined that there was no cause for the police to have intervened.

“The people involved knew each other,” Simonds said. “There was no gun or stolen property. We were unable to determine if a crime had been committed.”
