Red Claws’ Joseph among two waived by Celtics

The Boston Celtics waived forwards Kris Joseph and Jarvis Varnado, the team announced Sunday night.

Joseph, 6-foot-7, was the Celtics’ second-round draft pick in 2012. He played six games for Boston, averaging 1.2 points and four minutes.

In 10 games with the Maine Red Claws, Joseph averaged 17.7 points. Maine will retain his D-League rights if he clears NBA waivers and decides to stay in the D-League.

Varnado, 6-9, was signed out of the D-League, where he played for the Sioux Falls SkyForce. He averaged 1.2 points and 3.6 minutes in five games for Boston.

GOLF

PGA: Another attempt to start the PGA Tour season was blown away for the third straight day as play was suspended at the Tournament of Champions after about an hour when more 40 mph gusts came roaring down the Plantation Course at Kapalua, Hawaii, and left officials no choice but to wipe out yet another round.

They’ll try to get started again Monday, when the forecast is for less wind. The new schedule is 36 holes Monday, followed by an 18-hole finish Tuesday.

BRISBANE INTERNATIONAL: Andy Murray kicked off 2013 with a successful defense of his Brisbane International title, holding off Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov 7-6 (0), 6-4 at Brisbane, Australia.

CHENNAI OPEN: Second-seeded Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia beat Roberto Bautista-Agut of Spain 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the final at Chennai, India.

SYDNEY INTERNATIONAL: Caroline Wozniacki beat Poland’s Urszula Radwanska 6-1, 6-2 in hot conditions in the first round.

Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia upset fifth-seeded Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic, 6-1, 6-1.

HOBART INTERNATIONAL: American Sloane Stephens broke Laura Robson’s service in the opening game and went on to beat the British player 6-4, 7-6 (4) in the first round of at Hobart, Australia.

SOCCER

FA CUP: Luis Suarez was involved in a new hand ball controversy when he scored the decisive goal for Liverpool in a 2-1 victory over non-league club Mansfield.

Daniel Sturridge put the visitors ahead in the seventh minute, and Suarez extended the lead in the 59th by bringing the ball down with a hand before kicking it into the net.

The goal revived memories of an incident at the 2010 World Cup, when Suarez deliberately handled the ball on the goal line to block Ghana from scoring and was ejected. Ghana missed the penalty kick, and Uruguay advanced to the semifinals.

Arsenal will have to replay its third-round match after Swansea scored a late goal to secure a 2-2 draw.

SKIING

MEN’S WORLD CUP: Defending overall champion Marcel Hirscher reclaimed the points lead by winning a slalom at Zagreb, Croatia, for his third victory of the season.
