Torrey honored

Westbrook High School senior Elizabeth Torrey has recently been honored by the U.S. Senate Youth Program for her outstanding academic credentials, personal achievement and leadership.

After a rigorous selection process of 10 finalists performing testing, presentations and interviews, Torrey was chosen as top girl in Maine.

She has represented Westbrook at Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership and Dirigo Girls State. She is a semi-finalist for the national Coca Cola Scholars Program and is a student representative on the Westbrook City Council.

Wormell, Verrill engagement

Leroy and Lisa Wormell III of Westbrook have announced the engagement of their son, Brendon Chad Wormell, to Brianna Jeanene Verrill, the daughter of Gary and Annette Verrill of Gorham.

The future groom graduated from Westbrook High School and attended Southern Maine Community College. He is employed with the family business, L.C. Wormell & Son, in Cumberland.

The future bride graduated from Gorham High School. She also graduated from Spa Tech Institute, where she earned her degree as a licensed cosmotologist.

The couple resides in Cumberland. A fall wedding is planned for September.

Seniors to dine

Westbrook Senior Citizens will be served a meal when the group meets at noon on Monday, Jan. 21, in Westbrook Community Center, 426 Bridge St.

The menu includes stuffed shells with spaghetti sauce, salad, Italian bread and yellow cake with lemon sauce.

The seniors will see the Women of Ireland perform on Friday, March 15, at Venue di Milo in Swansea, Mass. In another trip, the seniors will cruise from Boston to Bermuda from Friday, May 31, to Friday, June 7. The New England band Straight Lace will perform golden oldies. A $400 down payment is required for the cruise.

Woman’s club ?to hear Jordan

Marie Jordan will speak about area birds when the Westbrook Woman’s Club meets at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 22, at Westbrook-Warren Congregational Church, 810 Main St.

Representatives of the Maine Youth Leadership Program will also speak at the meeting. Light refreshments will be served.

Girl Scouts registration

Girl Scouts of Maine will host a parent information and registration meetings at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24, in Westbrook-Warren Congregational Church, 810 Main St., Westbrook.

Girls and adults are invited to attend the meeting to find out about the many different ways today’s girls are participating in Girl Scouting. Participants will also learn about the flexible options and benefits of becoming a Girl Scout volunteer.

Charity luncheon generosity rises

Roberta Morrill of the Festival of Trees Committee recently reported that the 2012 Tips for Charity Luncheon in December generated $3,440.56, benefiting the Westbrook Food Pantry and the Westbrook Good Samaritan fund.

The luncheon tally increased $150.61 from $3,289.95 in 2011.

The 2012 ticket sales raised $775, down from $1,275 in 2011. But 2012 tips accounted for $2,665.56, up $650.61 from $2,014.95 in 2011.
