BUFFALO, N.Y. – Jay Harrison scored the go-ahead goal with 4:50 left, helping the Carolina Hurricanes to a 3-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Friday night.

Harrison fired a slap shot from the right point after Eric Staal won the faceoff, and the puck beat Buffalo’s Ryan Miller on the short side.

Alexander Semin tied it for the Hurricanes early in the third period, and Jeff Skinner scored an empty-net goal for Carolina, which has won two straight games. Dan Ellis made 40 saves in his first start for the Hurricanes.

Thomas Vanek scored for Buffalo, loser of two in a row. Miller stopped 39 shots in his first loss of the season.

DEVILS 3, CAPITALS 2: Ilya Kovalchuk scored 4:39 into overtime, and New Jersey won its third straight game.

Kovalchuk took a pass from defenseman Marek Zidlicky low in the left circle and beat Michal Neuvirth, who was outstanding in overtime. Neuvirth made seven saves, most on a New Jersey power play.

Stephen Gionta and Patrik Elias scored for New Jersey, which is off to its first 3-0 start since the 2002-03 season, the last time the Devils won the Stanley Cup.

With the overtime loss, the Capitals became the last team to earn a point this season.

LIGHTNING 6, SENATORS 4: Ryan Malone scored a pair of third-period goals as host Tampa Bay beat previously undefeated Ottawa.

Malone deflected Sami Salo’s blue-line slap shot at 3:39 of the third that pulled the Lightning even at 4. Tampa Bay took a 5-4 lead when the left wing scored from the low left circle with 7:02 to play.

Tom Pyatt extended the lead to 6-4 with a late empty-net goal. Matt Carle, Steven Stamkos and Victor Hedman also scored for the Lightning.

Ottawa got goals from Erik Condra, Jason Spezza, Erik Karlsson and Kyle Turris.

RED WINGS 5, WILD 2: Henrik Zetterberg snapped a tie midway through the second period, and Todd Bertuzzi scored his second goal of the game early in the third to lift Detroit past Minnesota.

Pavel Datsyuk, who assisted on Zetterberg’s goal, put Detroit ahead by two late in the second period. Datsyuk also set up Bertuzzi on his second goal that gave the Red Wings a 5-2 lead.

Zach Parise’s second goal of the season banked in off Zetterberg to pull the Wild within two midway through the third period.

Jimmy Howard made 23 saves for the Red Wings.

NOTES

OILERS: Edmonton claimed goaltender Niko Hovinen off waivers from the Philadelphia Flyers.

The 24-year-old native of Finland played in 16 games this season with the Trenton Titans of the ECHL. He went 4-6-3 with a 3.14 goals-against average and an .889 save percentage. .

FLYERS: Philadelphia signed right wing Mike Knuble to a one-year contract, and the veteran will be available for Saturday’s game at the Florida Panthers.

Knuble, 40, returns to the Flyers after spending the past three seasons with the Washington Capitals. The move was necessitated by an injury to Flyers forward Scott Hartnell, who is expected to missed up to eight weeks with a broken left foot.
