EASTON — The state Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating an early morning house fire that killed two brothers in northern Maine.

Easton Fire Chief Kim White said Mark and Paul Beaton died in a fire that was reported around 5 a.m. Tuesday and that destroyed the home owned by Mark Beaton. White said the brothers were in their early to mid-50s.

White said another eight family members and friends who were staying in the house made it out alive, with four or five of them requiring treatment for smoke inhalation.

He said the home didn’t have any working smoke detectors, and that it was Easton’s first fire fatality since 1959.

Easton is in Aroostook County about five miles east of Presque Isle along the Canadian border.
