ORONO – Justin Edwards scored 16 points Saturday to lead the University of Maine to a 66-52 victory against Albany in an America East men’s basketball game.

Zarko Valjarevic scored 13 points, Alasdair Fraser added 11 and reserve Jon McAllian chipped in 10 to help Maine (9-15, 4-7) snap a four-game losing streak.

After Mike Black’s 3-pointer put the Great Danes ahead early 5-4, Maine used a 22-6 run to go on top 26-11 with 6:55 remaining in the first half. Valjarevic and Alasdair made consecutive 3-pointers to spark the run and the Black Bears led 31-18 at halftime.

Albany (18-8, 7-5) had 10 turnovers in the second half and trailed by as many as 15 points.

Edwards scored 14 points in the second half, when Maine made 14 free throws.

Sam Rowley had 19 points, 15 rebounds and five steals for the Great Danes, whose four-game road winning streak ended.

BATES 59, HAMILTON 56: Luke Matarazzo drained his fifth 3-pointer of the game with 1:10 left to give the Bobcats (10-14, 4-6 NESCAC) a 57-56 lead, then added a pair of free throws with 15 seconds to play as Bates rallied from a 31-25 halftime deficit to beat Hamilton (12-11, 3-6) at Lewiston.

Ed Bogdanovich led Bates with 21 points; Matarazzo scored 17. Peter Kazickas scored 13, and Greg Newton and Bradley Gifford added 10 each for Hamilton.

BOWDOIN 75, WESLEYAN 68: Maximillan Staiger scored 23 points to lead Bowdoin (13-9) in a victory at Middletown, Conn.

Keegan Pieri, Matt Machias and Andrew Madlinger added 12 each, and Bryan Hurley had 10 as all five starters scored in double figures for the Polar Bears. Shasa Brown scored 22 for the Cardinals, Derick Beresford 19 and Mike Callaghan 13.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

ALBANY 86, MAINE 54: Julie Forster hit a pair of jumpers and two layups as Albany (20-3, 11-0 America East) outscored the Black Bears (2-21, 1-9) 22-4 over the final 6:28 of the first half to take a 40-24 lead at Orono.

Forster finished with 25 points, Lindsey Lowrie added 14 and Ebone Henry 13 for the Great Danes. Ashleigh Roberts paced Maine with 20 points.

MEN’S HOCKEY

VERMONT 3, MAINE 0: Kyle Reynolds scored twice as the Catamounts (8-14-4, 5-10-4 Hockey East) beat Maine (8-15-5, 4-10-5) at Burlington, Vt. 

Reynolds tipped Chris McCarthy’s shot past Maine goalie Martin Ouellette 48 seconds into the second period, and gave Vermont a 2-0 lead when he split a pair of defenders and beat Ouellette late in the second period. McCarthy added a power-play goal in the third.

Ouellette made 29 saves. Brody Hoffman had 19 saves for the Catamounts.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

MAINE 4, VERMONT 3: Brianne Kilgour had two goals and an assist to lead Maine (5-19-3, 2-12-2 Hockey East) over the Catamounts (7-17-3, 5-8-3) at Burlington, Vt.

After Emily Walsh gave Vermont a 1-0 lead on a power play at 1:36 of the first period, Kilgour answered 31 seconds later, then gave the Black Bears a 2-1 lead at 5:18 with a short-handed goal.

Brooklyn Langlois extended the Maine lead on a slap shot from the top of the offensive zone before Audra Richards’ goal at 9:21 of the first made it 4-1.

Dayna Colang of Vermont scored the only goal of the second period at 9:20, and Sarah Campbell made it 4-3 on a power play at 8:46 of the third .

Brittany Ott notched 37 saves for Maine. Roxanne Douville and Kelci Lanthier combined for 26 saves for Vermont.

BOWDOIN 3, HAMILTON 1: Stephanie Ludy scored twice to lead the Polar Bears (16-4-2, 10-3-1 NESCAC) over Hamilton (11-10-1, 5-8-1) at Brunswick.

Ludy goals gave Bowdoin a 2-0 lead in the first period. Kenzie Novak stole the puck from a defender in the Continental defensive zone and fed Ludy in front for a wrister top-shelf to open the scoring at 6:10. Ludy scored the second goal on a two-man advantage, finishing off another feed in front from Novak. Kayte Holtz also assisted at 10:23.

The Continentals pulled within 2-1 12 minutes in the second period. Katie Zimmerman broke loose and skated in alone on Kayla Lessard, backhanding a shot under the crossbar.

But Bowdoin countered five minutes later when Rachel Kennedy circled in the offensive zone and threw the puck into traffic at the top of the crease. The puck bounced to the stick of Ariana Bourque on the back post for a quick shot into the net.

Lessard made 20 stops for the Polar Bears; Becca Hazlett had 23 for Hamilton.

COLBY 2, WESLEYAN 1: Lauren Guarente and Carolyn Fuwa scored in the first period, and the Mules (9-12, 3-10 NESCAC) went on to beat Wesleyan (6-14, 2-11) at Waterville.

Guarente scored at 15:40 when Ellen Rascia battled with a defender in front and the puck squirted loose to Guarente on the left for the put-in. Megan Fortier also assisted. The Mules made it 2-0 just 1:01 later when Fuwa scored from Ally Kane.

Wesleyan pulled to 2-1 6:30 into the second period. Cara Jankowski slipped a faceoff to Jordan Schildhaus on the right side of the left circle in Colby’s end. Schildhaus ripped a low shot past Colby goaltender Brianne Wheeler for a power-play goal.

Wheeler made 15 of her 30 saves in the second period, when the Cardinals put 16 of their 31 shots on goal.

Wesleyan goalie Ashleigh Corvi finished with 25 saves.

SOFTBALL

WESTERN CAROLINA 5, MAINE 4: Kayla Myers doubled down the left-field line and scored on Amelia Griffin’s single to break a 4-4 tie in the sixth inning as the Catamounts (2-1) beat Maine (1-1) at Spartanburg, S.C.

Kristen Koslosky went 2 for 3 and scored twice, and EmJ Fogel added a pair of hits, including a double, for Maine.

Maine took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Koslosky led off with a single, stole second, Fogel walked and Jessica Burk’s single loaded the bases. Nikki Byron was hit by a pitch for the first run. After a failed fielder’s choice, Jean Stevens walked to make it 2-0.

S.C. UPSTATE 5, MAINE 1: Erika Harris’ two-run single highlighted a five-run second-inning that lifted the Spartans (1-0) over Maine (1-2) in Spartanburg, S.C.

The Black Bears took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Kaitlin Norton led off with a single up the middle and later scored on a wild pitch.
