AUGUSTA — U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree is introducing a bill to help survivors of sexual assault in the military get the benefits to which they’re entitled.

Pingree and fellow Democrat Sen. Jon Tester of Montana plan to announce their bill Wednesday in Washington.

Also appearing at a news conference will be Ruth Moore, a U.S. Navy veteran and survivor of military sexual trauma who battled post-traumatic stress disorder and homelessness after her assault and subsequent discharge from the Navy.

Pingree says service members who are raped or sexually assaulted face obstacles to receiving care and benefits.

Tester and Pingree’s legislation would make it easier for survivors of military sexual trauma to get benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs.
