PORTLAND — Cheverus High advanced to its first Western Class A girls’ basketball championship game, rallying in the second half to beat Deering 33-31 in the semifinals Friday night at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

The Stags (18-2) took the lead in the third quarter and secured it with some clutch foul shooting.

Georgia Ford hit two free throws with 36.1 seconds left to make it 31-28. Then Brooke Flaherty hit two  with 13.4 seconds remaining for a five-point lead.

Victoria Nappi led Cheverus with nine points. Marissa MacMillan scored 10 points for
Deering (17-3).

Cheverus will play two-time defending state champ McAuley in the regional final at 7 p.m. Saturday. The top-seeded Lions (20-0) held on for a 47-38 win over No. 4 Scarborough (16-4) in the other semifinal.

Jaclyn Welch scored 13 points to pace the McAuley, which opened a 26-12 halftime lead and withstood several Scarborough comeback bids in the second half.
