SURPRISE, Ariz. – Texas Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus was scratched Thursday because of what the club called “sensitivity in his left arm,” apparently caused by a tattoo.

Andrus spent nine hours the two days before Thursday’s spring training game against the Indians under a needle. He wanted a likeness of his late father, Emilo Andrus, who died in 1996 when Elvis was 7.

Andrus tells the Fort Worth Star-Telegram he’ll be ready to play Friday. He says: “It’s a memory of my dad. I’m really proud that it’s going to be on myself forever.”

The tattoo covers most of Andrus’ left arm from the elbow to shoulder. It will apparently be his last. He says “I’m done with this, too much pain.”

CARDINALS: Pitcher Jake Westbrook left the game against Miami with a bruised left knee and outfielder Carlos Beltran left with a bruised right toe.

GIANTS: Outfielder Andres Torres won’t play for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic and will be sidelined for at least a week because of a strained oblique.

YANKEES: Closer Mariano Rivera was all smiles after throwing 18 pitches in his first simulated game since knee surgery last spring.

METS: Reliever Pedro Feliciano was cleared to resume baseball activity while wearing a heart monitor.

MARINERS: Jon Garland pitched for the first time in nearly 20 months, Franklin Gutierrez and Nick Franklin hit home runs and Seattle won its sixth straight, beating San Francisco 4-3 at Scottsdale, Ariz.

DIAMONDBACKS: Gerardo Parra drove in three runs and threw out a base runner, leading Arizona to a 6-5 victory against Cincinnati at Goodyear, Ariz.

DODGERS: Clayton Kershaw struck out seven over three innings, and the Dodgers beat the Angels 10-8 at Glendale, Ariz., to leave their Los Angeles rivals 0-5-2 at spring training.

REDS: Cincinnati’s project to turn hard-throwing Aroldis Chapman into a starter got off to a strong start when Chapman faced the minimum six batters in a split squad 4-3 loss to Colorado at Scottsdale, Ariz.

ATHLETICS: Announced as the opening-day starter before the game, Brett Anderson allowed one hit in two scoreless innings in a 5-3 loss to the Chicago Cubs at Mesa, Ariz.

NATIONALS: Stephen Strasburg struck out six in three innings, and Washington and the New York Mets played to a 4-4 tie at Viera, Fla. The game was called after 10 innings.

ROYALS: James Shields pitched a hitless inning in his Kansas City debut, and the Royals remained unbeaten this spring with a 5-4 victory against San Diego at Peoria, Ariz.
