BOSTON — Kate Hall of Lake Region won the 55 meters with the fastest time ever by a Maine schoolgirl and also broke Maine’s all-time best mark in the long jump Saturday at the New England high school indoor track and field championships.
Hall’s time of 7.07 seconds in the 55 beat Maine’s all-time mark of 7.13 set by Logan Crane of Freeport in 2004.
In the long jump, Hall broke her own state indoor best with a leap of 18 feet, 5 inches but finished second behind Catherine Lacy of Darien, Conn., who went 18-7. Hall’s previous mark was 18-0, and Maine’s outdoor state best is 18-2 by Alison Kent of Gorham (1981) and Jesse Labreck of Messalonskee (2008).
Two Maine runners beat Maine’s all-time best in the girls’ 1,000, as Ellsworth junior Aleta Looker finished second in 2:53.77, just ahead of Waterville senior Bethanie Brown (2:53.88). The previous best was 2:55.91 by Jen Moreau of Mt. Ararat in 1999.
Brown went on to place second in the 2-mile in 10:45.86. Greely junior Kirstin Sandreuter finished third in 10:51.77.
Other top Maine finishers were Jared Bell of Deering, third in the shot put (55-3); Robert Hall of Scarborough, fourth in the mile with a school-record time of 4:20.20; Denzel Tomaszewski of Wells, fourth in the 55 dash (6.55); and James Ociti of Biddeford, fourth in the 600 (1:22.91).
