ORONO – Lauren Bodine scored 18 points to lead four players in double figures Saturday for the University of Maine, which fell 86-63 to New Hampshire in its first game since its bus accident Tuesday night in Massachusetts.

The Wildcats (11-17, 6-10) took control of the regular-season finale with a 9-2 run at the start of the second half that opened a 15-point lead.

Maine (4-24, 3-12) America East) quickly cut the deficit to seven points, but would get no closer the rest of the way.

Ashleigh Roberts added 14 points and seven rebounds for the Black Bears, and Liz Wood scored 13 points.

Maine will play at top-seeded Albany in an America East quarterfinal on Friday at 6 p.m.

PLATTSBURGH STATE 84, HUSSON 63: The Cardinals (20-8) closed out the first half with a 10-0 run to open a 41-26 lead en route to ousting Husson (20-9) from the NCAA Division III tournament during first-round play in Plattsburgh, N.Y.

Eric Modica scored 13 for the Falcons, Marc Zaharchuk added 12 and Wes Murphy had 11.

MEN’S HOCKEY

BOWDOIN 4, MIDDLEBURY 2: Danny Palumbo scored a pair of first-period goals to lead the top-ranked Polar Bears (21-3-2) to a NESCAC semifinal victory over No. 5 Middlebury (13-11-2) in Brunswick.

Daniel Weiniger added a goal and two assists for Bowdoin, which advances to the conference title game for the third time in the last four years, facing No. 2 Williams at 2 p.m. Sunday in Brunswick.

Bowdoin scored first when Palumbo put home a wide-open chance over Mike Peters’ glove-side shoulder at 11:17.

The Polar Bears added a goal when Weiniger sent a cross-ice pass to Palumbo, who redirected the pass inside the right post.

Max Fenkell stopped 32 shots for Bowdoin. Peters had 25 blocks in the net for Middlebury.

MEN’S LACROSSE

CASTLETON 12, SOUTHERN MAINE 10: Alex Green and Alex Denny scored three goals apiece for the Spartans as they scored six times in the fourth quarter to rally past the Huskies in a season opener at Castleton, Vt.

Kyle Baker scored four goals and assisted on another to pace the Huskies.

UNE 9, WHEATON 8: Mike Allan scored the equalizer with 3:24 left in regulation and Geoff Bruno added the game-winner just over one minute later as the Nor’easters edged the Lyons in a season opener at Biddeford.

Allan, Dan O’Gorman and Pat Wolfe each had two goals for UNE; Tyler Thomas had three assists.

SALEM STATE 11, ST. JOSEPH’S 5: A.J. Robertson finished with five goals and one assist to lead the Vikings (1-0) to a win over the Monks (1-1) in a game played at Deering High School’s field.

Andrew Sullivan scored a pair of goals for the Monks, and Andrew Hamill added one goal and two assists.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

SOUTHERN MAINE 15, MIT 11: Rosie Forster scored three goals as the Huskies rallied from a 4-0 deficit against the Engineers in a season opener at Cambridge, Mass.

Anh Nguyen, Lauren Santo and Sarah Pelligrinelli added two goals and one assist apiece for USM.

WELLESLEY 12, UNE 11: Brit Mscisz scored her fifth goal of the game midway through the first overtime period to lift Wellesley (1-0) to a win over the Nor’easters (0-1) at Biddeford.

UNE trailed 11-10 before Hannah Tavella scored the equalizer on an assist from Gina Newsome with 26 seconds left in regulation.

Tavella finished with four goals and one assist, and Newsome added three goals and two assists.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

BOWDOIN 3, AMHERST 1: Stephanie Ludy scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with 4:18 left in the game as the second-seeded Polar Bears (20-4-2) held off the third-seeded Jeffs (13-11-1) in a NESCAC semifinal at Middlebury, Vt.

Madeline Lane opened the scoring for the Polar Bears 6:06 into the game and Rachel Kennedy added an empty-net goal with 50 seconds left to extend the lead to 3-0.

Kayla Lessard made 27 saves for Bowdoin, which advances to face top-seeded Middlebury in the championship game on Sunday at 2 p.m.

SOFTBALL

ILLINOIS 7, MAINE 1: Kristen Koslosky went 2 for 2, and Jessica Burk singled and scored a run for the Black Bears (1-6) as they fell to the Illini (6-11) in their first game of the day at Clearwater, Fla.

BASEBALL

SOUTHERN MAINE 14, MOUNT ST. MARY 1: Chris Bernard hit a pair of two-run homers and struck out four batters over five shutout innings as the Huskies (1-0) downed the Knights (0-2) at Yaphank, N.Y.

Matt Verrier added a double and a triple and drove in four runs for the Huskies, who put up five runs in both the first and second innings.

WESTERN MICHIGAN 1, MAINE 0: Hunter Prince’s second-inning double down the right-field line plated Bradon Cable with the only run of the game, giving Western Michigan (2-9) a victory over the Black Bears in Port Charlotte, Fla.

Tommy Lawrence got the start on the mound for Maine, which entered the contest on a four-game winning streak. He allowed eight hits while striking out five and walking one over six innings.

Shaun Coughlin pitched two scoreless innings in relief.
