A 64-year-old Yarmouth man died Friday afternoon when his snowmobile collided with a tree in northern Penobscot County, according to the Maine Warden Service.

Wayne Nickerson’s snowmobile failed to negotiate a trail curve near a bridge over the Sebois River, became airborne and hit a tree, the warden service reported in a news release.

Nickerson was pronounced dead at the scene when wardens and emergency medical personnel arrived.

The crash occurred shortly after noon in Township 7, Range 7, near Shin Pond and northwest of Island Falls and Patten.

Nickerson suffered head trauma despite wearing a helmet, wardens said. His 2007 Arctic Cat F-8 was heavily damaged and was removed from the scene.

Nickerson was traveling behind Bert Dickenson, 49, of Lewiston.

It was Maine’s sixth snowmobiling fatality this winter. One of the fatalities occurred on Feb. 28 on a public way in Orrington and was handled by the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department.
