PORTLAND — Starting April 1, drivers won’t have to slow down to pay their fare at the Maine Turnpike toll plaza in New Gloucester.

The plaza will open two dedicated lanes, one in each direction of travel, that will allow drivers to pay using E-ZPass electronic toll collection devices while traveling at 65 mph, the Maine Turnpike Authority announced last week.

The new tolls will be able to process payments for up to 3,000 cars and trucks per hour, compared to a maximum of 325  vehicles using cash-payment lanes, according to the authority.

Three lanes accepting both cash and E-ZPass payments will continue to run in each direction at the toll plaza.

The highway-speed lanes were created in a $4.4 million project that began early last year. The toll plaza is at Mile 67, between the Gray and Auburn interchanges, about 20 miles north of Portland.
