TROY – State Police say a man shot himself Wednesday afternoon at his home as he was about to be arrested on child sexual charges.

Detectives had gone to the man’s home on Barker Road to arrest him on a charge of sexual exploitation of a minor, according to Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland.

When the man refused to answer the door, detectives called for the assistance of the State Police tactical team, according to McCausland.

Shortly after the team arrived outside the home, the man shot himself with a .22-caliber rifle, McCausland said. No police officers were involved in the shooting, he said.

The wounded man was transported to a hospital, according to McCausland. His name is being withheld as relatives are notified.
