SANFORD — Two people were left homeless and one firefighter had to be transported to a local hospital after fire destroyed a home on Branch Road in Sanford Monday night.

Capt. Ron Grondin said fire was already showing from the second floor of the wood framed structure when crews arrived around 6:40 p.m.

Initially, firefighters were led to believe that someone was inside the burning structure but that report proved to be false. The two people who live in the home at 27 Branch Road were not inside.

However, a Sanford firefighter had to be transported to Goodall Hospital after suffering a sprained ankle.

Grondin said the American Red Cross was notified and was expected to help the couple find housing.

About 50 firefighters from Sanford and four neighboring towns responded to the fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
