AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Senior right-hander Ryan Yates pitched into the eighth inning, giving up one run on six hits Wednesday to lead the University of Southern Maine to a 7-1 baseball win over the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Yates had five strikeouts. Andrew Richards finished the game for the Huskies (10-3), relieving with two outs in the eighth and forcing the final four batters to ground out.

Matt Verrier had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI for USM. Sam Dexter and Nick Grady both had two hits, one RBI and a run scored, and Tucker White had two hits, including an RBI double.

Tom Kerndt took the loss for the Warhawks (7-3).

 

SMCC 4, BRIDGTON ACADEMY 3: A walk-off single by Alex Brown gave the Seawolves (12-9-1) a victory in their home opener at South Portland.

The Seawolves fell behind 3-0 but rallied to win in the seventh. Michael Calabrese led the offense, going 2 for 3 with two RBI.

Freshman pitcher Corey Monjiat relieved in the seventh inning to pick up the win.

 

ENDICOTT 4, ST. JOSEPH’S 2: Erik Lemke hit a two-run triple in the bottom of the fourth to put the Gulls (6-4) ahead for good in a win over the Monks (7-3) at Beverly, Mass.

MEN’S LACROSSE

NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE 11, SOUTHERN MAINE 8: Brian Gillis scored four goals to help the Pilgrims (3-4) defeat the Huskies (3-4) at Gorham.

The Huskies led 6-5 at halftime but were held to two second-half goals as NEC pulled ahead. Ryan Foley and Mark White each had two goals for USM.

 

UNE 10, WENTWORTH 9: Rookie Sam Cloutier scored the winning goal with 58 seconds left as the Nor’easters (6-2, 1-0 Commonwealth Coast Conference) edged the Leopards (5-1, 0-1) at Biddeford.

Cloutier’s winner was his fourth goal of the game.

Senior Tyler Thomas scored twice and became the program’s career leader in goals with 125, passing the mark set by Sean Melnick in 2002 with a goal scored from just inside the attack area with 8:07 left in the first quarter.

Dan O’Gorman and Mike Allan also had two goals for the Nor’easters.

UNE goalie Jay Letendre had nine saves. Wentworth’s Jared Proulx stopped 17 shots.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

BOWDOIN 11, BATES 6: Carolyn Gorajek and Jordan Smith scored three goals apiece to help the Polar Bears (5-0, 4-0) defeat the Bobcats (3-5, 1-4) at Lewiston.

The Polar Bears held the Bobcats scoreless in the first half in building a six-goal lead.

 

COLBY 13, HAMILTON 9: The sixth-ranked White Mules (5-0, 3-0 NESCAC) scored the last four goals of the game to get by the 14th-ranked Continentals (4-2, 2-2) at Clermont, Fla.

Kate Pistel finished with four goals and an assist for the Mules.

 

UNE 17, WENTWORTH 6: Hannah Tevella scored five goals as the Nor’easters (3-4, 1-0 CCC) topped the Leopards (1-3, 0-1) at Biddeford.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

NIT: Roy Devyn Marble scored 24 points and Iowa ended Virginia’s 19-game home winning streak with a 75-64 victory in the quarterfinals at Charlottesville, Va.

Tyler Haws scored 25 points, Brock Zylstra added 23 and BYU cruised to a 79-62 victory over Southern Mississippi in the quarterfinals at Hattiesburg, Miss.

• Pierre Jackson had 20 points and 13 assists in his final home game for Baylor as the Bears beat Providence 79-68 in the quarterfinals at Waco, Texas.

Cory Jefferson added 26 points for the Bears.
