PITTSTON — A Richmond man hospitalized after crashing a dirt bike on Troop Road Sunday has died from his injuries.

Michael Lund, 22, died Tuesday morning at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, said Capt. Daniel Davies of the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office.

Police initially reported that Lund was from Pittston, but Davies said Tuesday that Lund lived in Richmond.

Lund was visiting a friend on Troop Road around 7 p.m., Sunday when went for a test drive on Lund’s dirt bike. The bike was not registered for a public road, Davies said. Troop Road is a public road that spans Smithtown, Wiscasset, and East Pittston roads.

Friends heard Lund take off down the road. Davies said they went searching for him when they no longer heard the bike’s motor and Lund did not return. No other vehicles were involved in the crash, Davies said.

“It appears the dirt bike was at full throttle prior to the crash,” Davies said.

Lund, who was not wearing a helmet, fell from his motorcycle and hit a tree. He was found just off the side of the road, Davies said.

Lund was taken by LifeFlight of Maine helicopter to CMMC, where he remained in critical conditions until Tuesday morning.

It is unclear what caused Lund to fall from his motorcycle. The accident was not reconstructed because it was a single vehicle with a single occupant, Davies said. The investigation is closed.

Kennebec County Sheriff’s Deputy Nathan McNally said Sunday that the bike was not damaged in the crash.
