Boston Red Sox shortstop Stephen Drew will play for the Portland Sea Dogs on Thursday at 6 p.m. in the team’s opener at Hadlock Field, according to media reports out of New York, where the Red Sox are playing.

Drew, 30, who signed a $9.5 million one-year contract with Boston in the offseason, missed most of spring training after suffering a concussion when he was hit by a pitch on March 7.

He was cleared to play two days ago and has taken part in extended spring training games in Fort Myers.

Before Wednesday night’s Red Sox-Yankees game, Boston manager John Farrell told Boston reporters that Drew will begin a rehab assignment Thursday in Portland. He could be with the Sea Dogs for multiple games. Farrell said he hopes Drew can play in the Red Sox home opener on Monday.

The Sea Dogs open their season with a seven-game home stand at Hadlock Field.
