READFIELD — Aaron Doughty (2-for-3, two RBIs, one run) broke a 3-3 tie with a two-run single in the sixth inning as the Morse High School baseball team opened with a 10-5 victory over Maranacook in a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B contest on Wednesday.
The Shipbuilders, 1-0 and scheduled to visit Lincoln Academy on Friday, scored seven runs in the sixth, getting RBI hits by Andrew LaCavera, Trenton Moore and Liam McDonough, who drove in three runs.
Morse jumped ahead 2-0 in the first inning on RBI hits by McDonough and Paul Whalen (3-for-4, double, RBI, two runs scored).
The Black Bears took a brief lead in the third as Cam Broche drove in two runs with a double for a 3-2 lead.
Morse tied it in the fourth.
Shipbuilders pitcher Aaron Barrett struck out seven over six innings for the mound win. He allowed two earned runs.
Broche and Tucker Whitman each had two hits for Maranacook (0-1).

Chase Allen had three hits, and Jeffrey Weeks and Matt Morrow combined on a threehitter to lead the visiting Witches to a KVAC Class A win at Topsham.
Ryan Lathrop went the distance for Bob Neron’s Eagles on four strikeouts, eight hits and 101 pitches. He did not walk a hitter.
At the dish, Lathrop, Sam Coombs and Sam Ashouwak each singled for the Eagles (0-1 and slated to host Oxford Hills on Friday).
Weeks and Morrow combined on seven strikeouts and three walks, and Weeks singled twice.
Softball
Host Maranacook scored six runs in the first inning and five more in the second to roll to a 15-3 victory over Morse at Readfield in the KVAC opener for both teams.
“We made 10 of our 12 errors in the first two innings, with Maranacook only having three hits,” said Morse (0-1) coach Will Laffely, whose charges visit Lincoln Academy on Friday (1 p.m.). “Once we settled down, we played them fairly even. We have much hard work and focus on our defense to work on in order for us to compete.”
Morse pitcher Micailla Barone went the distance on five hits, six walks and two strikeouts. Maranacook pitcher Ashley Belanger struck out seven and permitted four Shipbuilder hits.
Nicole Laggan, Lucy Rawson, Morgan Cram and Leia Graves each singled for Morse, while Belanger, Lindsey Cookson, Lindsey Hilton, Kaitlynn Chick and Lindsey Jackson had one single apiece for the 1-0 Black Bears.

Emily Gilmore had a two-run home run and a grand-slam, finishing with six RBIs in leading
Brewer. Lindsey Houp doubled and singled twice, and pitcher Alexa Grindle struck out five.
Maddy Alexander slugged a two-run homer for Mt. Ararat (0-1 and scheduled to host Oxford Hills on Friday at 1 p.m.). Alexander added a single, Maggie Wessell singled twice and Mallory Nelson singled.
Kim Leslie struck out three and walked 13 on the mound for the Eagles.
Boys lacrosse
For the second straight day, Brunswick jumped out to a big first-half lead and cruised to a win, downing Cony 16-5 in the Dragons’ KVAC home opener.
Brunswick, 2-0 and scheduled to host Lewiston on Friday (6:30 p.m.), rode the strong play of Bailey Caparrato and Cam Glover. Caparatto had five goals and two assists, while Glover finished with four goals and three helpers. Alex Croatti and Ryan Croatti both had two goals, while Matt Brooks, Reuel Wilgus, Ian Schlosser added one goal each. Alex Croatti and TJ Sullivan added a pair of assists apiece, with one helper coming from Ryan Croatti, Konnor Scarponi and Eli Downs.
In goal, Chris MrVichin had 14 saves in the win, while midfielders Elliot Boyd, Schlosser and Zach Hamm played well.
Brandon Suvette had three goals to pace Cony (0-2), which received 18 saves from netminder Caleb Carr.

Ben Weeks tallied seven goals to lead the visitors in a battle of Eagles at Topsham.
Messalonskee (2-0) jumped out to a 4-3 lead after a quarter, led 6-3 at the half and 7-5 after three.
Jeremy Williams led Mt. Ararat (0-1) with two goals, one assist and eight groundballs in the loss. Seth Martin, Nick Dow, Devin Monteiro and Kyle Lussier added one goal each, while Ryan Smith picked up an assist. Monteiro had five groundballs and Lussier four.
In goal, Mt. Ararat’s Ed McGuire had 12 stops.
Mt. Ararat is scheduled to visit Edward Little on Friday (4 p.m.).
