BANGOR — The police bomb squad in Bangor has recovered and destroyed a grenade that was found behind an auto parts store.

Sgt. Paul Edwards, a police spokesman, says a public works crew discovered the grenade at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday near the intersection of David and Main streets.

The bomb squad shut down the roads while a police robot placed the grenade in a containment vessel. Police then removed the grenade and destroyed it.

Authorities say the grenade was a functional training device and contained an active blasting cap, but it appeared that it didn’t have any explosive powder.
