AUGUSTA — A new law will expand wild turkey hunting opportunities this spring in Down East coastal areas of Maine.

With the beginning of the spring turkey hunting season just days away, Gov. Paul LePage on Thursday signed into law a bill that allows a spring hunt in wildlife management district 27, which is located along the coastline.

Game department wildlife biologists have determined that the turkey population in that area is at a level that can withstand a spring hunt.

The district will be open for hunters who have a big game license and wild turkey hunting permit for bearded turkeys only.

This spring’s youth hunting day is Saturday, April 27. The spring wild turkey hunting season is open from April 29 to June 1.
