BRUNSWICK — The first five high school softball games in Luke Potter’s coaching tenure at Brunswick have been a struggle, with the Dragons outscored 84-5 to begin 0-5.
On Monday in a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference matchup with winless Lewiston, Brunswick and Potter found some light at the end of the long tunnel, scoring four runs in the seventh in a close 6-5 loss.
“It was a heck of a game, and we hit the ball and played hard,” said Potter after watching his team belt out a season-high eight hits.
Down 6-1 in the seventh, Emily Girardin singled and Mary Sasso battled through a long at-bat for a walk to put two runners on with one out. Rachel Moroney, who singled twice, drove in Girardin with a single, and an error on the play allowed Sasso to score. Jena Libby, who also had two hits, drove in Moroney and later scored on a sacrifice fly by KK Teel.
Lewiston (1-5) was able to escape by retiring the final Brunswick hitter on a flyball.
Teel went the distance on the mound, allowing nine hits, four walks and striking out three.
Erika Brochu led the Blue Devils offense with two singles and a double, while Lauren Belleau had three hits and Morgan Bowen a pair of singles.
Brunswick is slated to visit Erskine Academy today at 4 p.m.

In a back-and-forth contest, the host Lions recovered from an early 3-0 deficit to post a KVAC Class B win over the 1- 5 Shipbuilders.
Morse also led 5-2 in the fourth, but Belfast (2-3) scored two in the fourth and one run in the fifth and sixth frames for a 6-5 lead. The Shipbuilders tied the game in the seventh, but the Lions scored in the bottom of the frame to walkoff with the win.
“Morse needs a little more focus on defense,” said Shipbuilders coach Will Laffely after his team committed five errors. “Some in-between hits that were called by outfielders and infielders, then stopped and watched the ball drop.”
Jacelyn McNeill struck out three and walked four in the loss, while Belfast pitcher Killyan Richards had five strikeouts.
At the plate, Katrine Lapham led Belfast with three singles.
Nichole Laggan doubled twice and singled for Morse, which hosts Camden Hills on Friday. McNeill added three singles, Meghan Stover singled twice and drove in three runs, and Megan Hixon singled.
