Police throughout Maine gathered a record amount of unwanted prescription medication over the weekend as part of the sixth National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.
Departments collected 22,260 pounds of medication dropped off by residents at their local police station or other collection sites. Most of the collections were held Saturday.

That’s up sharply from the 13,980 pounds collected last fall and higher even than the previous record of 19,980 pounds collected in the spring of 2012.
“I think it was a combination of great collaboration among law enforcement … and the communities, and (people’s) firm belief that responsibly disposing of all medications is the right road to travel,” said Michael Wardrop, agent in charge of the federal Drug Enforcement Administration’s Maine office. The DEA coordinates the take-back and pays for disposal.
