Nor’easters lose first game, 3-2, in softball tournament

Fifth-seeded Salve Regina edged No. 4 University of New England 3-2 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference softball tournament at Beverly, Mass., on Monday.

Amanda Vaudreuil and Adrienne Chase hit consecutive doubles to give UNE (22-16-1) a run in the first inning. Vaudreuil drove in Amanda Vallante with a long single in the third for UNE’s other run.

The Nor’easters will play Western New England in an elimination game on Thursday.

BASEBALL: Endicott (28-11) scored three times in the eighth inning and then used a bases-loaded walk in the ninth for a 4-3 victory over Bates (15-15) at Beverly, Mass.

Endicott freshman and Lewiston native Cobin Hyde threw a scoreless eighth for the Gulls and had the rare chance to face his older brother, Bates sophomore Mekae, who drew a walk.

Kevin Davis had a pair of hits with an RBI for Bates.

PREP SCHOOLS

BOYS’ LACROSSE: Berwick Academy (4-6) rallied but fell a goal short, losing 6-5 to the Pingree School (4-3) at Hamilton, Mass.

Pingree used a 3-0 second-half run to go up 6-3, but Berwick rallied as Liam Darcy assisted Will Reis and Sam Hereford scored his third goal of the contest.

Berwick goalie Luke McNamara stopped 10 shots.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE: Tilly Burzynski had four goals as Berwick Academy (10-0) came away with a 15-12 win against Proctor Academy (3-4) at Berwick. Melanie Mait and Aimee Briand contributed three goals apiece and netminder Kaitlyn Wurzer made 22 saves.

SOFTBALL: Taylor Lyman hit a two-run homer and Sammi Marden collected two hits for Berwick Academy (4-3) in an 8-5 loss against the Winsor School at Boston.

TENNIS

PORTUGAL OPEN: Sixth-seeded Benoit Paire of France beat Igor Sijsling of the Netherlands 7-6 (5), 6-3 in the opening round at Oeiras, Portugal.

BOWLING

CANDLEPINS: Shawn Morrison of the Bangor-Brewer Lanes and Brooke Anton of the Big 20 in Scarborough captured men’s and women’s state titles at Brewer in the finale of the candlepin bowling season.

The scratch eliminations featured head-to-head competition among the top 12 male and female bowlers from an eight-tournament series.

Morrison beat Joey Hutchinson of the Big 20 in a 10-string men’s final, 1,275 to 1,206. Anton beat Angie Davis, also of the Big 20, 1,162 to 1,096.

BASEBALL

EASTERN LEAGUE: Monday night’s game between the Portland Sea Dogs and Reading Fightin Phils at First Energy Stadium was postponed due to rain.
