PORTLAND — Portland firefighters used ladders, ropes and a “stokes” basket to hoist a man out of the water near the Ocean Gateway terminal late Tuesday night.
Police received a call from someone at Bug Light in South Portland at 11:30 p.m. that they could hear someone yelling for help near the East End of the downtown waterfront.
Responding police could hear a man yelling at the base of the seawall abutting the Ocean Gateway terminal but couldn’t see him.
Police and a taxi driver parked nearby who heard the commotion helped get the man to the rocks at the base of the seawall.
Firefighters arrived and were able to hoist the man to safety and take him to a nearby hospital to be evaluated for hypothermia. Authorities estimate the man was in the water about 45 minutes but he was unable to answer questions about what happened when he was rescued.
Low tide was at 9:40 p.m. Tuesday.
