BANGOR – Bangor Savings Bank, one of Maine’s largest banks, with 57 branches, was rated the highest in New England in customer satisfaction in a recent survey by J.D. Power and Associates.

Jim Conlon, the bank’s president and CEO, said the distinction is gratifying because the results came directly from customers. “It’s not about a slick marketing campaign,” he said. “We have no input.”

This was the first year that Bangor Savings, which has been growing and expanding into Greater Portland in recent years, has met the criteria to be in J.D. Power’s survey.

The survey asked 52,000 banking customers around the country questions about their banking experiences. Bangor Savings received a satisfaction score of 831, of a possible 1,000 points. The bank was cited specifically for having low fees. It was among the first in Maine to offer free ATMs, in 2006.

Bangor Savings has eight branches in Greater Portland. Conlon said that number is likely to grow.
