CHINA — Police say a 13-year-old boy is facing charges after leading police on a high-speed chase.

Officials say the chase began at 2:30 a.m. Saturday when a Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office deputy approached a suspicious van along Route 3 in China.

According to a news release, the driver led the deputy on a chase for about eight miles toward Augusta, then he finally stopped when he saw a spike strip placed in the road by Augusta police.

Police identified the driver as a 13-year-old boy and the passenger as his 14-year-old stepbrother. The van belonged to their mother’s boyfriend.

Authorities say the boys were released to their mother, but that the 13-year-old was later arrested after the van owner said the boy assaulted him during an argument after the chase.
