ARLINGTON, Texas – Left fielder David Murphy of the Texas Rangers, and a former member of the Portland Sea Dogs, was out of Saturday night’s game against the Boston Red Sox with a stomach virus.

Murphy likely would have been back in the starting lineup with the Rangers facing a right-handed pitcher for the first time in five games.

Leonys Martin, who primarily splits center field with Craig Gentry, started in left field for the second time in his career. Gentry started in center.

The left-handed Murphy hasn’t started since last Sunday at Minnesota, and is 1 for 18 in his last eight games. He has a career average of .438 (7 of 16) against Red Sox right-hander John Lackey, the starter Saturday night.

Manager Ron Washington said Murphy was feeling fine Friday but caught the virus from his wife and children.

INDIANS: Nick Swisher returned after missing three games because of a sore left shoulder.

He was the designated hitter and batted fourth against Minnesota.

Swisher hadn’t played since Monday. He missed the two-game series against Philadelphia and the Indians had an off-day Thursday. He was out again Friday but took batting practice.

Swisher is hitting .265 with two homers and nine RBI. He started the first 23 games, 12 at first base, six in right field and five as the DH. He signed a four-year, $56 million contract with the Indians in January.

ATHLETICS: Oakland placed Chris Young on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left quadriceps and recalled fellow outfielder Michael Taylor from Triple-A Sacramento.

Taylor took a redeye flight to New York and was available for the game against the Yankees.

Young was injured during Monday night’s 19-inning victory against the Angels and was placed on the DL retroactive to April 30. He is batting .172 with four homers and 15 RBI in his first season with Oakland.

Taylor, 27, once a highly touted prospect, was hitting .329 with five homers and 16 RBI in 18 games with the River Cats. He went 0 for 6 with the A’s last month and Manager Bob Melvin said he’s likely to get playing time against left-handed pitching.

DODGERS: Left-hander Ted Lilly was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strain in his right rib cage and starter Clayton Kershaw was activated from the bereavement list.
