LYMAN — Maine State Police said a 4-year-old girl was killed Monday evening when a sport utlity vehicle operated by her mother crashed into a tree on the Walker Road in Lyman.

State police say speed is likely a factor in the crash, which took place a short distance from the family’s home.

Steve McCausland, a spokesman for the Maine State Police, identified the victim as Venna Cline, who turned 4 on Valentine’s Day.

Cline was sitting the rear passenger seat behind her mother, 32-year-old Tonya Cline, when the SUV left the road and hit a tree.

Cline’s sister, 16-year-old Carissa Cline, escaped with minor injuries. The girl’s mother also suffered minor injuries.

McCausland said the accident took place around 7:30 p.m.

A team of state troopers is investigating the crash.
