NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — Police say a detective who died in an off-duty crash in Orange County was legally drunk, wasn’t wearing a seat belt and was texting in the moments before impact.

Police in Newport Beach released a report Wednesday on the death of 57-year-old Mike Delgadillo, a veteran of the Costa Mesa police force.

The report says Delgadillo had been drinking at two different establishments before he got behind the wheel and crashed into a freeway pillar. He was off duty at the time.

The coroner says Delgadillo died of injuries to his chest and abdomen.
