CUMBERLAND – Bailey Train had control when he needed it most and Greely kept its poise to dispatch York 10-0 in a mercy rule-shortened Class B Western Maine Conference baseball game Wednesday at Twinbrook.

Train gave up two hits, struck out eight and hit six batters in 52/3 innings for the win. He also went 2 for 4 with an RBI double and two runs scored.

Pat Finnegan hit a two-run homer in the fourth to blow the game open as the Rangers remained unbeaten at 8-0.

“Offensively we had a lot of good at-bats. Defensively we were solid,” said Greely Coach Derek Soule. “(Train) had good stuff today. He struggled at times with his location but he had good velocity. It was our best all-around effort to date. It’s exciting to see the growth.”

Zach Leal took the loss for the Wildcats (6-2), giving up seven runs on 10 hits. York also committed three errors.

Greely got to work right away, scoring in the first when Matt Ames’ single to shallow left field brought in Train from second to make it 1-0.

In the second, Greely pounced on two York errors on one play to push the lead to 3-0. Will Bryant reached first on a high throw from third and made it to second when York’s first baseman overthrew second. Mike McDevitt (2 for 4, two RBI) walked and Sam Porter laid down a bunt to move Bryant and McDevitt over. Nick Dunnett’s sacrifice fly to right brought in Bryant (2-0) and Tommy Buchholz’s single drove in McDevitt (3-0).

The Rangers blew the game open with a four-run third. After Jonah Normandeau singled, Finnegan sent the ball over the left-field fence for a two-run homer. Then Bryant lined a shot to deep right field for a double.

“I was thinking curve but he gave me a fastball,” said Bryant. “I’ve been in a little slump so it felt good to get a hit like that.”

He moved to third on McDevitt’s single and came home on a passed ball. Porter’s sacrifice fly to right brought in McDevitt for a 7-0 lead.

Train came through in the York fifth. With two outs and the bases loaded, Sam Johnson worked the count full. Train fired in a fastball for a strikeout.

“I was just throwing him balls to hit, then let my defense do the work,” Train said, “and luckily I got the strikeout.”

Greely’s 6-foot-7 first baseman McDevitt turned in the defensive play of the game in the sixth. With a man on first, he dived to stop a hard liner, then swiped out the runner with a tag.

“That was more just reflex than anything,” he said. “I took a stab at it; once I realized it was in my glove I went to get the tag.”

The Rangers ended it in the sixth when Train’s RBI double made it 8-0, and McDevitt’s two-run single pushed it to 10-0.

“We’re still learning how to compete with upper-echelon teams,” York Coach Chuck Chadbourne said.

“We’ll take some things from this one and learn from it.”
